Today’s Daily Prompt asks us to nominate someone for Person of the Year.

I almost didn’t bother with today’s Daily Post because I couldn’t think of anyone who deserved this award who had not already received it. But then I went and looked up who had been awarded the honour previously, and I was surprised to find that there was one person who was not listed, and who I felt definitely should be.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding Nelson Mandela. He was, for all intents and purposes, a terrorist throughout the Apartheid regime, but for good reason. Since then he has changed South Africa in more ways than one and has affected the world in such a positive way that it is unbelievable that he has never been awarded the Person of the Year. Personally, I would have designated him Person of the Century if I could.

With his health in decline, it is clear how much everyone in this country cares for Madiba, and I think that he has brought people together even in his final years, perhaps more so than ever before.

So I would nominate Nelson Mandela as Person of the Year.
